CEO’s Help Kick Off Community Book Drive

Growing up in a household with books is imperative to a child’s learning, but 61 percent of low-income families have no books at home for their children.

United Way of Central Carolinas, along with Child Care Resources, Classroom Central, Read Charlotte and Reach Out and Read, is hosting a virtual book drive, March 1-20, with the goal of helping kids build a love of reading while growing their libraries at home and at school.

To kick off our community book drive, each CEO from the book drive’s partners shared the book and memory that helped spark a love for reading.

FAVORITE BOOK: THE RUNAWAY BUNNY

Janet Singerman | President, Child Care Resources Inc.

My favorite book was The Runaway Bunny. It is such a beautiful story about a mother’s love for her child.”

FAVORITE BOOK: THE DARK IS RISING

Munro Richardson | Executive Director, Read Charlotte

“I loved its story about a boy who discovered he had unknown powers and became part of a group fighting to keep the world safe from evil powers. I liked The Dark Is Rising so much, I also read the other four books in the series. To this day my favorite stories are science fiction and fantasy.”

FAVORITE BOOK: WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE

Laura Clark | President and CEO, United Way of Central Carolinas

“When I was a child I had imaginary friends and I think I just loved the idea of a magical place where a child could experience a different world!”

FAVORITE BOOK: CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

Karen Calder | Executive Director, Classroom Central

“One of my favorite childhood books is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. In fact, I still have a first edition hardcover copy of this book. Like Charlie, I was an only child who had a very special relationship with my grandfather, so I could relate to this character. I like the book’s optimistic message that good things happen to good people and that Charlie is rewarded for his honesty and integrity.”

FAVORITE BOOK: LITTLE CRITTER

Callee Boulware | Executive Director, Reach Out and Read

“I always loved Little Critter books – I enjoyed his adventures and love his friend the spider.  I enjoyed them as a child and loved sharing them with my own kids!”
