Let’s Chat! United Way Shares Its Impact Through Volunteerism

United Way of Central Carolinas joined United Ways across the country on April 10, 2019 for a #UnitedWayChat Twitter discussion to recognize and celebrate volunteers who lend their time, talent, brains and brawn to causes they care about in the Charlotte region.

 

Q1: How are you celebrating National Volunteer Week/National Volunteer Month?

 

A1: National Volunteer Week coincides with our United Way Volunteer Week, a celebration of service as we rally our community to take action through the contribution of time and talent–from our annual Charlotte Playground Build to Hands On Charlotte Day!

 

A1: (part two) We held our United Way Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast to recognize and thank all our individual and corporate volunteers who make a difference with United Way throughout the year. Fresh off the press is our recap.

 

Q2: How are volunteers driving your impact agenda?

 

A2: We could easily go on and on about how our generous volunteers drive impact for United Way, but we’ll let the numbers speak for themselves!

 

Q3: Can you share a profile of one of your volunteers or volunteer groups?

 

A3: Wanting to create a more positive world, Jermone Jackson began tutoring children through The Sky Is The Limit Community Development Corporation–a volunteer opportunity he found through our Hands On Charlotte programming. Read Jermone’s story here.

 

Q4: What is your newest volunteer program and/or what is your most innovative/creative volunteer program?

 

A4: Last summer, we joined area partners to unite our community through volunteerism during our inaugural Live United Day. The event included indoor and outdoor projects that helped prepare schools in our community to be successful in the upcoming year.

 

Q5: What is your largest volunteer event of the year?

 

A5: Our signature community service event for 25-plus years, Hands On Charlotte Day brings together hundreds of volunteers of all ages to complete meaningful projects in neighborhoods across Charlotte. Read the story here.

 

Q6: Have you received news coverage for your volunteer work?

 

A6: Most recently, WSOC covered our 16th annual Charlotte Playground Build on April 5, which kicked off our United Way Volunteer Week festivities! Hundreds of volunteers braved the rain to build a playground at Barringer Academic Center in one day. Read the story here.

 

Q7: Who serves on your United Way’s board?

 

A7: We can’t thank our board members enough for their service and leadership in advancing our mission to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of our community. We appreciate them so much their faces are on our website here.

 

Q8: Who are some of your corporate partners that help mobilize volunteers in your community?

 

A8: Whether it’s tutoring a classroom, beautifying a neighborhood or building tiny libraries, many of our corporate partners like Wells Fargo, Duke Energy and TIAA emphasize social responsibility and showing what it means to Live United.
