Volunteers Mobilize Across Community for Hands On Charlotte Day

Ever since she was a little girl, Brittany Bumphus has liked helping people in her community. Now an adult with a successful career in Charlotte, she still manages to find time to give back, including during United Way’s Hands On Charlotte Day.

 

For more than 25 years, Hands On Charlotte Day has been the signature community service event of United Way’s Hands On Charlotte, mobilizing hundreds of volunteers for projects benefiting local nonprofits and schools. This year’s event was presented by Wells Fargo in conjunction with United Way Volunteer Week and National Volunteer Week.

 

Bumphus was among the group of Wells Fargo volunteers lending a hand at the Stratford-Richardson YMCA, one of multiple project sites across the community for Hands On Charlotte Day.

 

“Helping out the team that works here at the YMCA and having that extra helping hand is great because I know they work hard,” Bumphus said “This will definitely help them have a better time going forward.”

 

While Bumphus and Wells Fargo volunteers cleared flower beds, cleaned classrooms and built basketball goals at the YMCA, other volunteers assembled furniture at Beds For Kids, maintained grounds at Shining Hope Farms and took part in family friendly activities at Marie G. Davis K-8 School. Volunteers also had opportunities to spruce up Charlotte neighborhoods including Arbor Glen, Brookhill and Lakewood.

 

Jamall Kinard, president of the Lakewood Neighborhood Alliance, said he looks forward to Hands On Charlotte Day and the role it plays in the alliance’s mission to engage, educate and empower residents.

 

“How we think about this in Lakewood is team IMPACT, which stands for individuals making progress and change together,” Kinard said. “Hats off to United Way for their engagement and for supporting the vision in the Lakewood community.”

 

Volunteerism is a critical piece of United Way’s fight for the education, health and financial stability of every person in the greater Charlotte community. In addition to signature events like Hands On Charlotte Day, United Way offers flexible volunteer opportunities for companies, individuals and families throughout the year, connecting them with service projects that have meaningful impact in and around the Charlotte area.
