A Legacy of Service at Belk

Belk strives to ensure its United Way campaign always connects back to the community they serve – both externally and internally.

Case in point: Belk’s popular back-to-school shopping season is always a time of high excitement for families, but stressful in households lacking funds for a required school uniform. So for years, Belk has donated thousands of free uniforms to children in need, working through United Way and its agencies to support students in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Kannapolis, and Union County school systems.

In another peak shopping season highlight, Belk last year donated its 2016 holiday Belkie Bear proceeds to United Way, choosing a bear’s design from a 9-year-old customer who wanted “to help families who do not have very much money.”

Internally, there are multiple employees who have benefitted from United Way services and have shared their powerful stories with coworkers to bring a real-world perspective to Belk’s fundraising. And Belk employees are always hands on, from serving on our board of directors to participating in our Day of Caring event last fall, building a Belk-branded tiny library in support of children’s literacy.

The Belk name has been connected with United Way and local philanthropy for generations – we’re grateful for the legacy they’ve created throughout our five-county region.
