Duke Energy In Action Month

Volunteerism plays a key role in United Way of Central Carolinas’ fight for the education, health, and financial stability of every person in the community.

 

Duke Energy has served the communities in its six-state footprint for more than a century through charitable giving and employee volunteerism. The company’s passion for giving back through community service is a significant part of its mission.

 

Throughout the month of May, Duke Energy employees volunteered at a diverse group of nonprofit partners in communities including Charlotte during the annual Duke Energy In Action Month.

 

“Community service is an integral part of our purpose to power the lives of our customers and the vitality of our communities,” said Sarah Degnan, senior community affairs consultant at Duke Energy. “More than 2,800 employees volunteered nearly 12,000 hours at 182 different projects across our company’s footprint.”

 

As part of United Way’s long-standing relationship with Duke Energy, the Hands On Charlotte team helped coordinate local community service projects for employees during the yearly initiative.

 

Dozens of employees offered their time on May 15 at the Carolina Raptor Center to repaint bird enclosures, spruce up habitats, and provide general cleanup at the site.

 

Several dozen employees also got involved on May 18 with volunteer opportunities at the Renaissance West STEAM Academy and Howard Levine Child Development Center in the Renaissance neighborhood, one of United Way’s United Neighborhoods communities.

 

Employees served as classroom helpers and breakfast buddies at the school, assisted in the mother’s room and with gardening at the child development center, and put together literacy kits and snack packs for children.

 

“United Way’s knowledge of community needs and expertise for executing impactful volunteer engagements makes them an excellent partner for this initiative as we create enthusiasm and engagement for our employees, and lasting impact for our community,” Degnan said.

 

In addition to these projects, Duke Energy team members work with United Way throughout the year to coordinate volunteer projects and team-building activities through Hands On Charlotte.

 

In June, more than 100 employees will volunteer their time for projects across Charlotte including sorting through donated clothing at Crisis Assistance Ministry, preparing books for distribution at Promising Pages, and helping with facilities management at the Humane Society of Charlotte.
