Leading by Example at EY

In 2016, EY’s Charlotte office piloted a new program to identify the next generation of leaders – for both the firm and the community.

The EY Growth Council identified 18 emerging leaders and took them to the next level. The year-long program helped them chart out their future within the firm as well as in the community, with sessions focused on board governance, fundraising, and even a simulation that enabled them to participate in United Way’s community investment process, determining where funds are invested for the greatest impact. The year concluded with a “speed networking” event where 18 nonprofits came in to share their mission and vision, helping each emerging leader find their ideal match for board or committee service.

The pilot was so successful that it’s now being rolled out throughout EY’s Southeast region.

That innovation is a perfect example of EY’s commitment to education, sustainability, and entrepreneurship. The firm already has a young, dynamic workforce, having grown by 670 employees in the last 10 years. But they recognize that continued growth will require creating a culture of opportunity across the Charlotte region, seeding their next generation of employees as well as creating a vibrant community in which to live.

Such commitment, along with a highly successful fundraising campaign that grew by 7.8 percent last year, helped EY win the Spirit of North Carolina Award in the professional services category (501-1000 employees).
