Publix Expands Its Community Impact

Publix is only in six states – yet they are the third largest United Way donor in the world.

In the most recent campaign, Publix employees contributed $35.5 million to United Way. Paired with a $26.5 million match from Publix Super Markets Charities, the total invested into their communities through United Way is $62 million this year.

Here in North Carolina, Publix is relatively new, with only 10 stores open (so far) in our local United Way footprint. Yet they’re already among the top 10 donors to United Way of Central Carolinas, and closing in fast on our top 5.

Think about that: comprised largely of hourly employees, 10 stores and their local corporate office invested nearly $600,000 through United Way into the local community, thanks to a generous corporate match.

Such outsized impact helped Publix recently win the “2016 Newcomer” honor at United Way’s statewide Spirit of North Carolina Awards.

“Our associates are passionate about giving back to their communities,” said Kim Reynolds, Publix’s Charlotte media and community relations manager. “They volunteer countless hours serving in their communities and their generosity to the United Way truly exemplifies the spirit of giving established by George Jenkins.”

In an annual tradition established in Publix’s home state of Florida, United Way’s staff recently visited each local store for Publix Appreciation Day, including the Cabarrus and Lake Norman stores, taking a moment to say thanks to all the employees who gave. While the goal was to show our gratitude to them, Publix associates were equally enthusiastic about the work of United Way, sharing stories of recent teambuilding volunteerism at our partner agencies and looking ahead to Publix Serves Day later in April.

It’s safe to say that as Publix grows across the Charlotte region, their impact on the community will expand just as rapidly.
