A-LIST Celebrates Impact of Local African-American History

United Way’s A-LIST group has grown and accomplished much over the past several years – from hosting the EmpowHERment conference in 2016 to holding quarterly Boardroom Business sessions to observing Black History Month at this year’s History in the Making event.

 

Honoring Charlotte’s rich history of African Americans and celebrating the paths they are creating for the next generation of community leaders was the highlight of History in the Making, presented by Accenture.

 

At the networking event, the group reflected on the many African-American community leaders who have helped shape local, national and global growth throughout history, including Sarah Stevenson, the first African-American woman elected to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools board; Spencer Merriweather, the first African-American district attorney in Mecklenburg County; and Vi Lyles, the first African-American mayor in Charlotte.

 

Creating an environment of opportunity for all by improving economic mobility through racial equity and social justice initiatives is part of United Way’s impact work.

 

A-LIST encourages African Americans to lead through philanthropy and volunteerism and to advocate for racially equitable social change in United Way’s five-county network.
