How to Make a Difference as a Tutor in Our Community

One of the most effective ways to help children achieve academically is through dedicated, one-on-one instruction. Through various tutoring opportunities, United Way partners provide ways to ensure children develop a strong foundation for success in school and life.

 

Here are four ways you can get involved as a tutor in our community:

 

Augustine Literacy Project

 

Augustine Literacy Project focuses on first and second graders who are struggling with foundational reading skills including letter/sound correspondence and sounding out words. To become an Augustine tutor, a volunteer completes the Augustine Training Class and commits to provide 60 hours of free one-on-one, long-term tutoring to children.

Heart Math Tutoring

 

Volunteering with Heart Math Tutoring is a fun, effective way to make a difference in only 30 or 60 minutes per week. Tutors work one-on-one with first through fifth graders who are below grade level in elementary math.

 

With the support of an on-site coordinator, volunteers use an easy-to-follow curriculum featuring hands-on activities and games. Tutoring times range from early morning through mid-afternoon, and training is 45 minutes at your selected school during your chosen tutoring time.

HELPS Fluency Tutoring

 

HELPS (Helping Early Literacy with Practice Strategies) is a literacy intervention program to build elementary students’ fluency and comprehension skills. HELPS volunteers participate in three or four hours of training. Tutoring sessions last 10-15 minutes and volunteers can serve three students over the course of 45-60 minutes each week.

 

Information sessions are scheduled for May 10 at Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Sugar Creek Branch and May 22 at Myers Park Presbyterian Church during the volunteer appreciation brunch.

North Star Reading Partners

 

North Star Reading Partners is committed to ensuring every child is reading on or above grade level by third grade. The organization’s district-wide commitment is to help each student become a stronger and more confident reader.

 

The tutoring program is organized by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and pairs volunteers as reading buddies with students once a week for an hour. All reading buddies are registered as volunteers through the school system before working with students.
