Young Leaders hosting first Talk United event

Charlotte is known for its youthful and diverse people, quality of life, and immense population growth. In the past 10 years alone, Charlotte has experienced a 40-percent growth rate, evidenced by ever-emerging apartment complexes.

 

This extraordinary growth brings challenges to the communities. It creates unstable neighborhoods, transportation difficulties, increased education and health care needs and economic mobility challenges. The Charlotte City Council takes into consideration these challenges and is responsible for setting policies that are designed to invest in your community and yield long-term results.

 

Talk United: Raising Charlotte’s Economic Profile

United Way invites you to Talk United, a new community conversation series. The first event, Talk United: Raising Charlotte’s Economic Profile, is hosted by United Way’s Young Leaders engagement group and includes an evening of networking and learning to understand how the City Council is tackling challenges and planning on raising the economic profile of Charlotte.

 

During the event there will be a live recording of the podcast “R&D in the QC,” hosted by City Council Members Tariq Bokhari and Larken Egleston, who will be joined by Jania Massey, founder Philanthropy Circle 365 and a Unite Charlotte grantee. You will have an opportunity to join the conversation and find out how you can become more involved in shaping the future of Charlotte.

 

For this event, we ask that you bring your Halloween spirit by donating a bag of candy for children in the Renaissance neighborhood to have a safe and fun trick-or-treat event. For each bag donated, you will get a raffle ticket for prizes including Comedy Zone tickets and restaurant gift cards.

Talk United Special Guests

 

 

Tariq Bokhari is a Charlotte City Council member and leader in the financial technology industry serving as executive director of the Carolina Fintech Hub. Prior to his role with Carolina Fintech Hub, he launched his own startup company, Aggressant, and served as the head of innovation and investment for FIS Global. He has served in a variety of executive roles at GE Capital, Wells Fargo and Wachovia.

 

 

 

Larken Egleston is a Charlotte City Council member and represents Republic National Distributing Company as a brand ambassador for western North Carolina. He is on the North Carolina advisory committee for the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, serves as an advisory board member for Central Piedmont Community College’s Culinary Arts program and is a volunteer firefighter with Long Creek Volunteer Fire Department.

 

 

 

Jania Massey is the founder and executive director of Philanthropy Circle 365, a nonprofit consulting firm. She also is the co-founder of Women Entrepreneurs 2.0 and Stiletto Boss University, a nonprofit organization that teaches women and youth how to start and sustain businesses in their community. She is an active member of the Junior League of Charlotte and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
