United Way Thanks Union County for Successful Campaign

Continuing an annual tradition, United Way of Central Carolinas honored its top Union County donors and volunteers with a thank you breakfast today, hosted by Carolinas HealthCare System Union.

Denise White, campaign chair, reviewed 2017 campaign results including the Day of Caring held on August 26, 2017, which brought together over 1,200 volunteers to serve at 132 project sites. Steve Poston, the 2017 United Way board chair for Union, recognized the Books and Brackets reading challenge Union County Public Schools began in February. Third and fourth graders from all over the county participated, reading for a total of over 12 million minutes in this year’s challenge.

“As we’ve learned from numerous studies, third grade reading level is a strong indicator of whether a student will be successful in their school career and graduate from high school,” said Poston. “United Way was thrilled to partner with the school system for this event because it speaks volumes to the importance of literacy.”
