Community Voice Leads the Conversation in Grier Heights

In Grier Heights, community voice continues to shape the future of the neighborhood.

Recently, residents gathered during a neighborhood association meeting for a Community Visioning Session hosted in partnership with CrossRoads Corporation, the community quarterback serving Grier Heights through United Way of Greater Charlotte’s neighborhood-based work. The session created space for residents to reflect on the strengths of their community, discuss ongoing challenges, and share hopes for the future of Grier Heights.

For United Way of Greater Charlotte, the session was an important opportunity to meet residents where they already gather and engage in trusted community spaces. By joining an existing neighborhood association meeting, the conversation felt rooted in authentic community leadership and resident participation.

Grier Heights has a deep and important history in Charlotte as a historically Black neighborhood built on resilience, culture, and community connection. Today, organizations like CrossRoads Corporation continue working alongside residents to protect that legacy while supporting affordable housing, educational achievement, economic stability, and healthy living throughout the neighborhood.

The Community Visioning Session also brought together additional community partners, including representatives from the library system, the City of Charlotte, and Mecklenburg County. Their presence helped connect residents directly to information, resources, and conversations about the future of the community.

Throughout the session, residents openly shared perspectives about neighborhood change, community needs, and the importance of ensuring longtime residents remain part of Grier Heights’ future. Conversations reflected both pride in the neighborhood’s history and a desire to preserve the sense of connection and belonging that has defined the community for generations.

What made the gathering especially meaningful was the collaboration between residents, neighborhood leaders, and community organizations working together in the same room. Rather than conversations happening separately, the session created an opportunity for shared dialogue grounded in listening, transparency, and partnership.

At United Way of Greater Charlotte, community visioning sessions are about more than collecting information. They are about creating opportunities for residents to help shape solutions, influence priorities, and guide the future of their neighborhoods through lived experience and local leadership.

As conversations continue in Grier Heights, partnerships with organizations like CrossRoads Corporation remain essential in helping ensure residents are not only heard, but actively involved in the decisions impacting their community every day.
