Finally a Girl Scout

How one childhood dream reflects the impact of a partnership that’s helping girls become tomorrow’s leaders.

Growing up, Ashley, a member of the United Way of Greater Charlotte team always wanted to be a Girl Scout.

She admired everything the organization represented: confidence, adventure, leadership, friendship, and service. But becoming a Girl Scout wasn’t something she had the opportunity to experience as a child.

Recently, that changed.

During a visit to Girl Scouts Hornets’ Nest Council, one of United Way of Greater Charlotte’s funded nonprofit partners, Ashley was officially welcomed into the Girl Scout sisterhood as an adult, making a childhood dream come true.

“It was an experience I’ll never forget,” Ashley shared. “Finally becoming a Girl Scout in my 30s reminded me that it’s never too late to belong to something bigger than yourself. It also gave me an even greater appreciation for the experiences these girls are having today and how those moments can shape a lifetime.”

While Ashley’s story is personal, it also reinforced something much bigger.

As our team toured Girl Scouts Hornets’ Nest Council, we saw firsthand how girls across our region are discovering their strengths, building confidence, exploring STEM, serving their communities, and developing leadership skills that will stay with them long after they’ve earned their last badge.

Every meeting, every outdoor adventure, every service project, and every new challenge helps prepare girls to become confident leaders in their schools, workplaces, and communities.

That’s why United Way of Greater Charlotte invests in organizations like Girl Scouts Hornets’ Nest Council.

Our role is to strengthen nonprofit partners that are creating opportunities every day for children and families across Greater Charlotte. By investing in organizations with deep community roots and proven impact, we’re helping ensure more young people have access to experiences that build confidence, leadership, resilience, and a sense of belonging.

The visit was a reminder that leadership doesn’t begin when someone starts a career. It begins much earlier, when a child is encouraged to try something new, speak up, solve a problem, or believe in herself.

For Ashley, becoming a Girl Scout in her 30s was the realization of a childhood dream.

For the thousands of girls served by Girl Scouts Hornets’ Nest Council each year, those experiences are happening right now.

Together, we’re helping ensure they have every opportunity to grow into the leaders our community needs tomorrow.
