The Humana Foundation commits $500,000 to COVID-19 Response Fund, bringing fundraising total for effort past $19 million
The Humana Foundation announced it is committing $500,000 to the community-wide efforts of the COVID-19 Response Fund, bringing the fundraising total to more than $19 million.
The donation is part of The Humana Foundation’s April 30 announcement to commit $50 million to coronavirus relief and recovery efforts to a select group of organizations supporting essential workers, food security, behavioral health and local communities. This commitment builds upon The Humana Foundation’s continued work in its Bold Goal Communities, which aims to improve population health in North Carolina by co-creating solutions that address health-related social needs for communities.
“The Humana Foundation understands the far-reaching strain the pandemic has placed on many organizations working on the front lines to provide healthcare, food and employment for those disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 health crisis, and our aim is to remove barriers and help them respond, recover and rebuild,” said Walter D. Woods, chief executive officer of The Humana Foundation. “Our intention with this commitment is to not only help provide immediate crisis relief, but also serve as a catalyst in building sustainable achievement and long-term community resilience.”
The COVID-19 Response Fund was launched in March by Foundation For The Carolinas and United Way of Central Carolinas to support those most impacted by the pandemic. So far through three grant cycles, the fund has awarded more than $10 million in grants to a range of nonprofits – from large institutions to smaller grassroots organizations – on the front lines of the crisis, providing food, shelter, economic assistance, healthcare and more to families and individuals most in need.
The next grant cycle will open May 20 at 10 a.m. and run until June 10 at noon. Visit uwcentralcarolinas.org/grants/COVID for details.
“Thanks to the generosity of The Humana Foundation, we are better positioned to help our citizens recover and rebuild from this crisis,” said Foundation For The Carolinas President and CEO Michael Marsicano. “There’s more to be done, but with partners such as The Humana Foundation, we can help each other get through this difficult time together.”
The COVID-19 Response Fund is administered through a partnership between Foundation For The Carolinas and United Way of Central Carolinas, in close coordination with the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. Additional efforts have been established throughout the Carolinas in counties served by FFTC and/or United Way of Central Carolinas.
“Though there’s still more to be done, thanks to generous partners such as The Humana Foundation, our local nonprofits will get help to those who need it the most,” said Laura Yates Clark, president and CEO of United Way of Central Carolinas. “This community’s most vulnerable need access to food, healthcare, educational assistance and shelter, which these funds will help provide.”
Donations to the COVID-19 Response Fund have ranged from a two-dollar commitment from an anonymous online donor to $1.3 million from Mecklenburg County. Van Every Foundation, Kim and Johnny Belk, and Alfred and Amy Levine Dawson; $150,000 each from Wells Fargo, Wells Fargo Championship and Sean & Andrea Smith; $200,000 each from Allstate Insurance and Vanguard; $250,000 each from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Community Foundation, the Weisiger Fleming Family Fund, EY, PwC/The PwC Charitable Foundation, and The Hearst Foundations; $270,000 from BlackArch Partners/The Regions Foundation; $500,000 each from Ally Financial, the Duke Energy Foundation and the John S. & James L.
