What a Bicycle Taught Us About Teamwork

In celebration of World Bicycle Day, the team at United Way of Greater Charlotte traded spreadsheets and meetings for a challenge that was equal parts fun, creative, and surprisingly insightful.

The task sounded simple enough: recreate a bicycle.

But there was a catch.

Staff members were divided into three teams, and only one person from each team could view the reference image of the bicycle at a time. After studying the image, they returned to their group and described what they saw. Teammates then worked together to draw the bicycle piece by piece, relying on communication, trust, and teamwork to bring the final image to life.

As you might imagine, the final drawings looked a little different from the original.

There were missing details, creative interpretations, and plenty of laughs along the way. Yet the activity revealed something important: success is rarely about having all the information yourself. It is about how effectively you communicate, listen, collaborate, and problem-solve as a team.

At United Way of Greater Charlotte, those same skills are at the heart of our work every day. Whether we are bringing together community partners, supporting local nonprofits, engaging volunteers, or working alongside residents to address challenges, meaningful progress happens when people come together around a shared goal.

The bicycle challenge reminded us that everyone brings a unique perspective to the table. When we listen to one another, trust one another, and work together, we can accomplish far more than we could alone. While our bicycle may not have looked exactly like the original, the connections built during the activity were the real success. Because strong teams build stronger communities.

As we celebrate World Bicycle Day, we are grateful for a team that is willing to learn together, laugh together, and continue moving forward together in service to our community.

After all, we go further together.
