Meck Dec Day: A Legacy of Community Action

Every year on May 20, Charlotte celebrates Meck Dec Day, short for Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence Day. The observance honors a legendary 1775 event where local patriots in Mecklenburg County reportedly declared independence from Great Britain more than a year before the United States officially declared independence on July 4, 1776.

Whether viewed as history, legend, or a mix of both, Meck Dec Day represents something that still defines Charlotte today: communities coming together to shape their future.

At United Way of Greater Charlotte, that same spirit drives the work we do every day.

Strong communities are built when people step up, work collectively, and invest in one another. Across our region, we see that through neighborhood partnerships, community visioning sessions, housing stability initiatives, volunteer efforts, and investments that help families build long-term opportunity.

The challenges facing our community today may look different than they did in 1775, but the importance of community leadership and collective action remains the same.

Meck Dec Day is more than a reflection on the past. It is a reminder that the future of our community has always been shaped by people willing to step forward, work together, and invest in something bigger than themselves.

That spirit still lives across Mecklenburg County today. We see it in neighbors advocating for one another, nonprofits working hand in hand, businesses investing in local families, and residents helping shape the future of their communities.

At United Way of Greater Charlotte, we believe lasting change happens when communities come together with purpose. As we celebrate Charlotte’s history, we also celebrate the people continuing that legacy through action, partnership, and service every single day.

The work of building a stronger community is ongoing, and everyone has a role to play.
