Bringing Community Together at The Longest Table

Inspiring. Powerful. Necessary. An immersive experience. These are just a few of the ways people described The Longest Table event that took place on Saturday, September 27.

Nearly 1,000 individuals from the greater Charlotte community gathered for something truly special – to share a meal, create conversation and connect in ways that reminded us how powerful it is to simply come together.

Stretching across the concourse at Truist Field, one long table was filled with energy, smiles and meaningful exchanges. Attendees were encouraged to sit by someone new to enhance their experience of meeting and interacting with new people and sharing stories.

Six questions appeared on monitors around the field and concourse during the meal to guide conversations, with Table Facilitators seated between groups to promote vulnerability and ensure every voice was heard. The buzz of chatter and occasional laughter was proof that when people gather with open hearts and minds, there is an opportunity for real connection.

“In these seemingly chaotic times, it was a gentle reminder that a little civil dialogue can actually take us places. I look forward to connecting deeper with the neighbors I joined,” said Asha Ellison, UNC Charlotte Urban Institute, in a social media post

“The connections were real, the dialogue was fruitful, and the impact was undeniable,” said the team at Project Outpour in a social media post

The team at United Way would first like to say a special thank you to Truist and the Knights for providing us the space to hold this event, and a huge thank you to the full list of sponsors and vendors whose generosity and partnership made this event possible. Your support ensured that every detail came together to create a memorable experience for all. We are truly grateful for your commitment to building stronger, more connected communities.

We are grateful to everyone who attended and helped make the day a success. The Longest Table wasn’t just a free brunch – it was an opportunity to remove barriers, build bridges and celebrate the diversity and strength of our community.

“During this time of division in many of our communities, breaking bread while breaking down barriers reminded me that authentic conversations are what build true connection, even amongst strangers,” said Aaron Randolph, Carolina Youth Coalition, in a social media post

To all who participated, thank you for taking a seat at our table.
