SunTrust and United Way Help Solve Financial Challenges

SunTrust’s philanthropic mission is “lighting the way to financial well-being,” and United Way is a key partner in delivering on that mission.

For example, working with United Way nationally, SunTrust recently launched MySmartMoney, powered by the SunTrust Foundation. MySmartMoney is a free financial education and planning site that offers simple, useful tips and tools to help people manage their money.

The user-friendly site helps people organize and identify short- and long-term solutions to financial challenges. It walks users through concrete steps for tackling real-life problems, including saving for college, providing for a family, planning for a retirement, and caring for aging parents.

SunTrust complements this innovative online tool with volunteerism, encouraging employees to offer their time and expertise to families trying to create budgets or file taxes. And they back it up nationwide by investing $6.5 million into local communities through United Way in the most recent campaign, the most in SunTrust’s history.

Locally, their campaign increased by 13 percent over the prior year thanks to the leadership of SunTrust SVP Mortgage Area Manager Mark Case, along with fundraising events such as an annual golf tournament organized by SVP Branch Quality Manager Jerry Porter. Beyond their own campaign, SunTrust’s Managing Director of Financial Risk Management Mike Connor serves on United Way’s Alexis de Tocqueville cabinet to help recruit more leadership donors throughout the community.

“SunTrust wants to help create a thriving community where everyone has more opportunity to succeed,” said David Dulin, United Way’s relationship manager supporting SunTrust. “MySmartMoney is a great example of how they’re partnering with United Way in innovative ways to move people toward a life of financial strength, and we’re grateful for their support.”
