Hundreds of Volunteers Participate in the Annual Union Day of Caring
United Way of Greater Charlotte serves Union County residents through supporting housing stability, food security, access to health care, childhood literacy and mentoring programs with a special focus on supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In addition to supporting our resident-led impact strategy, we host an annual Day of Caring in Union County.
This past weekend, more than 400 volunteers showed up for senior citizens and nonprofit organizations in the area to complete 57 outdoor projects. Groups from Atrium Health, Wingate University Athletics, Kiwanis of Monroe and many others came together to cut grass, weed flowerbeds, prune shrubs, remove trash, wash windows, clean gutters and help with painting.
Before projects started, volunteers gathered in Irwin Belk Stadium at Wingate University for a Day of Caring kickoff celebration. The band played, cheerleaders performed, a group stretch was led by Union County native Alicia Benson and attendees heard remarks from United Way’s Regional Director of Anson and Union Counties Keanna Marsh and Wingate’s football coach Joe Reich.
“Collective volunteering and giving are not just acts of kindness, they are essential for creating a lasting impact. Today, we are not just lending a helping hand, we are building a stronger community that is more connected,” Marsh said.
“When we come together like this, we have the power to change lives.”
Thank you to David Sherwood and Wingate University, the Day of Caring committee members and to all the volunteers for dedicating your Saturday morning to lending a helping hand to our Union County neighbors. Our Annual Day of Caring isn’t just about the physical transformation that takes place at a home; it is about the impact we have when we are united for the greater good.
A special thank you to our event sponsors, ATI Specialty Materials and Food Lion, as well as our media sponsors, WCNC Charlotte and The Enquirer Journal.
