Season’s Greetings from Our President and CEO

Dear United Way Family,

 

As 2020 draws to an end, this season is a reminder that the work we do at United Way of Central Carolinas is just as relevant today as it was nearly 90 years ago when our organization was established. Our organization began in 1931 in Mecklenburg County as “Emergency Relief” and was created to help people affected by the Great Depression through the power of collective giving.

 

This year has been especially challenging for our community as a result of the public health and economic crises brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. The needs are great and our nonprofit partners continue to experience increased demand for their services.

 

This month, we announced the investment of $21.7 million into communities across the Charlotte region, awarding grants to more than 100 nonprofits whose missions closely align with our community impact strategy to build stronger neighborhoods, improve racial equity, boost economic mobility and help people meet their basic needs.

 

Because of the generous support from individuals, corporations and local government, this year’s investments include $10.7 million in partner funding for 119 agencies. We are excited to welcome 36 new partners with first-time grants as part of this investment.

 

This past March, United Way launched the COVID-19 Response Fund in partnership with Foundation For The Carolinas and, within weeks, began awarding grants to nonprofits to provide relief to individuals and families facing hardships. Learn more about United Way’s 2021 investment.

 

Throughout this challenging year, our community came together to make a difference in people’s lives. I am incredibly grateful for the support of our donors and the hard work of our nonprofit partners, volunteers and staff.
