United Way Announces Strategic Shift to Mental Wellness in Cabarrus County
2023 grant cycle opens in August; Letter of Interest and information sessions begin in June
As part of its continued shift towards aligning with the needs identified by the community, United Way of Central Carolinas announces that the Cabarrus County grants process aims to support and strengthen residents’ mental wellness through resources and strategies to improve mental health, greater understanding of crisis intervention strategies and supports, and expanded access to care.
Through a collaborative of mental health professionals and community organizations, United Way’s efforts will focus on equipping community members with the skills needed to identify and appropriately help people dealing with crisis & non-crisis mental health situations.
One of the ways United Way will accomplish this will be partnering with Mental Health America of Central Carolinas to provide mental wellness training to the community.
“Our goal is to equip parents, educators, religious leaders, human resource professionals in workplaces, neighborhood leaders and other leaders in the community with the resources they need to serve the people they support,” said Kellie Cartwright, United Way Director of Regional Development.
The strategic focus on mental health came from a review of community needs and demographic data, along with feedback from community engagement sessions that included a diverse group of community members, local government officials and local United Way donors and volunteers. This aligns with United Way’s overall focus on place-based initiatives that help to advance economic mobility and racial equity.
“Mental health challenges do not prevent people from being valuable members of our community, and there is a call to embrace people because mental wellness affects everyone,” said United Way Advisory Board Chair, Hank Alston. “It is more critical now, than ever, that we extend a helping hand to anyone wanting to work on their mental wellness, just as we do physical wellness. It is imperative that we help where we can.”
