Supporting ESL communities in Charlotte

Charlotte ha crecido de manera extraordinaria en los últimos años, convirtiéndose en un mosaico vibrante de culturas y lenguas. Como inmigrante latina que llegó a este país hace 24 años, he experimentado en carne propia los desafíos de encontrar recursos en nuestro propio idioma. Aunque deseamos integrarnos a una nueva cultura, enfrentarnos a un país con un idioma y una cultura diferentes puede resultar abrumador. Esta realidad me ha llevado a comprometerme plenamente a apoyar a nuestra comunidad latina en cada paso del camino. 

Como inmigrante, comprendo profundamente los obstáculos y retos que enfrentan otros en situaciones similares. Pero también me maravilla ver cómo diversas organizaciones han recorrido un largo camino para derribar estas barreras y ofrecer asistencia integral a los inmigrantes. En mi rol como Neighborhood Relationship Manager en United Way, he tenido el privilegio de conocer a organizaciones excepcionales cuyo trabajo transforma vidas y fortalece nuestra comunidad. 

En nuestra iniciativa de subsidios de vecindario en United Way, hemos identificado áreas con significativas poblaciones de hablantes de inglés como segunda lengua, como el este de Charlotte, Sugar Creek y el norte de Mecklenburg. En estas áreas, hemos encontrado una gran necesidad y hemos colaborado con organizaciones dedicadas a atender esas necesidades. Entre nuestras agencias destacadas se encuentran: 

  • Caterpillar Ministries 
  • Esther’s Heart for Transformation 
  • Missionary Athletes 
  • Urban Promise 
  • Refugee Support Services 
  • Charlotte Bilingual Preschool 
  • Amity Medical Group 

Estas organizaciones trabajan con dedicación y pasión para ofrecer recursos esenciales en áreas como salud mental, traducción, programas extracurriculares, salud y alimentación. Su labor incansable asegura que las familias de habla inglesa como segunda lengua reciban el apoyo necesario en su propio idioma, lo cual es crucial para su integración y bienestar. 

Al comenzar mi trayectoria en United Way hace un año, enfrenté desafíos personales que reflejaban las dificultades de muchos inmigrantes. Navegar por los sistemas sin un dominio completo del idioma y sin saber por dónde empezar puede ser desalentador. Estas experiencias me han hecho más consciente de la importancia de simplificar y mejorar el acceso a los recursos para quienes más lo necesitan. 

Estoy inmensamente agradecida a United Way por su continuo apoyo a estas organizaciones, que permite que su trabajo sea aún más efectivo. El poder contribuir a este esfuerzo y ser testigo de los cambios positivos en nuestra comunidad es un honor y una fuente de gran inspiración. Juntos, no solo estamos brindando asistencia, sino también cultivando esperanza y creando nuevas oportunidades para nuestras familias. 

Ser parte de este viaje de transformación y traer nueva esperanza a nuestras comunidades es un privilegio que valoro profundamente. Cada desafío que superamos y cada éxito que celebramos nos acerca a un futuro más inclusivo y brillante para todos.

Charlotte’s evolution over the past few years has been remarkable, and with its growth has come a vibrant tapestry of cultures and languages. As a Latina immigrant who arrived in this country 24 years ago, I know firsthand the complexities of navigating a new culture and language. Even with the best intentions to embrace a new way of life, starting over in a different country can be daunting. This personal journey has fueled my passion for supporting our Latino community and addressing the unique challenges faced by immigrants. 

In my role as a Neighborhood Relationship Manager at United Way of Greater Charlotte, I have had the profound privilege of working with organizations that are making a tangible difference in our community. Through our neighborhood grant initiative, we’ve pinpointed areas with significant populations of English as a Second Language (ESL) speakers, including East Charlotte, Sugar Creek, and North Mecklenburg. We’ve partnered with exceptional organizations that are dedicated to meeting the diverse needs of these communities: 

  • Caterpillar Ministries 
  • Esther’s Heart for Transformation 
  • Missionary Athletes 
  • Urban Promise 
  • Refugee Services 
  • Charlotte Bilingual Preschool 
  • Amity Medical Group 

Each of these organizations plays a crucial role in offering essential services such as mental health support, translation assistance, after-school programs and healthcare. Their unwavering commitment ensures that ESL families receive the help they need in their own language, which is vital for their integration and well-being. 

When I began my journey with United Way almost two years ago, I encountered personal challenges and transitions that mirrored the struggles faced by many immigrants. Navigating systems and understanding how to access resources without knowing the language felt overwhelming. These experiences deepened my empathy and reinforced my commitment to making these systems more accessible and supportive. 

I am profoundly grateful to United Way for providing the necessary resources and support to empower these organizations and amplify their impact. Being part of this work and witnessing the positive changes in our community is an honor and a source of great inspiration. Together, we are not just helping individuals; we are nurturing hope and creating opportunities for countless families. 

In every challenge we face and every success we achieve, we are building a brighter, more inclusive future for all. It is an incredible privilege to be a part of this journey and to contribute to the transformation of our communities in our city and be able to do it as a job where I can combine my passion for helping and my professional skills thanks to United Way of Greater Charlotte.
