Increasing Engagement by Making Volunteerism Easier

The core of United Way’s work is to bring communities together to create a better life for all.

Fundamental to that focus is volunteer engagement and civic participation. Toward that end, we are expanding the capacity of our Volunteer Center by acquiring Hands On Charlotte, one of the most successful volunteer organizations in the region.

United Way’s Volunteer Center has led community volunteerism in Charlotte for more than four decades, particularly focusing on corporate groups. Working primarily with individual volunteers, Hands On Charlotte has done the same for 25 years – starting back in 1991 when United Way backed its initial founding.

The key driver to bring the two organizations together now is to provide our community with a single, unified resource for volunteerism and increase opportunity community-wide for engagement at both the corporate and individual level.

In a nutshell, we believe this move will make it easier for people to volunteer … which will increase the number of people who take the time to get involved … which will help change even more lives across the Charlotte region.

The Hands On Charlotte brand will carry on and be incorporated into United Way when the merger is complete later this winter, with Hands On Charlotte’s staff becoming part of the United Way Volunteer Center.

Watch for volunteer opportunities to grow in 2017!
