4 Ways the Community Came Together During United Way Volunteer Week

Hundreds of volunteers across the Charlotte community answered the call during United Way Volunteer Week, April 5-13, uniting in service and taking action through the contribution of time and talent to benefit local nonprofits and schools.

 

United Way Volunteer Week, presented to the community by Wells Fargo and in conjunction with National Volunteer Week, included multiple opportunities for community members of all ages to roll up their sleeves, lend a hand and get involved.

 

Here are four ways the community came together during the week:

 

 

Charlotte Playground Build | April 5, 2019

 

Each year, United Way brings together companies across the community for the Charlotte Playground Build. Now in its 16th year, the event involved volunteers building a student-designed playground in one day, along with completing a dozen smaller projects, at Barringer Academic Center in west Charlotte.

 

This year, corporate partners contributed nearly $75,000 to fund the playground build and collectively mobilized the largest number of volunteers in the event’s history. Read more.

 

 

United Way Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast | April 10, 2019

 

More than 35 individuals and groups were recognized for their efforts to improve the lives of people across the Charlotte community during the United Way Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast, presented by TIAA at LaCa Projects.

 

In addition to honoring those who donate their time and talent through United Way programming, the annual Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards were presented at the event, including two Medallion Award winners. Read more.

 

 

#Time4Good Volunteer Fair | April 10, 2019

 

Sponsored by Duke Energy and Wells Fargo, more than two dozen nonprofits greeted the public at the #Time4Good Volunteer Fair inside the Wells Fargo Atrium. The event served as an opportunity for people to plug into the community and support local organizations.

 

 

Hands On Charlotte Day | April 13, 2019

 

For more than 25 years, Hands On Charlotte Day has been the signature community service event of United Way’s Hands On Charlotte, mobilizing hundreds of volunteers for projects benefiting local nonprofits and schools.

 

This year’s event presented by Wells Fargo involved projects like cleaning classrooms at the Stratford-Richardson YMCA, assembling furniture at Beds For Kids, maintaining grounds at Shining Hope Farms and completing family friendly activities at Marie G. Davis K-8 School. Volunteers also had opportunities to spruce up Charlotte neighborhoods including Arbor Glen, Brookhill and Lakewood. Read more.
